BAOFENG SW-9 is a 10 W tri-band transceiver with an SSB receiver, 1000 channels, Bluetooth and USB-C
The BAOFENG SW-9 is a handheld transceiver that combines classic VHF/UHF communication with significantly broader receiving capabilities. It offers transmission on three bands, power up to 10 W, 1000 memory channels, Bluetooth, a color display, and shortwave reception including SSB.
BAOFENG SW-9 is a handheld transceiver that combines classic VHF/UHF communication with significantly broader receiving capabilities. It offers transmission on three bands, power up to 10 W, 1000 memory channels, Bluetooth, a color display, and shortwave reception including SSB.
It is an interesting hybrid for anyone who wants one handheld radio for communication and, at the same time, a wideband monitoring receiver.
Three transmission bands
The official specifications list transmission in the following ranges:
- VHF 136–174 MHz,
- 220–260 MHz,
- UHF 400–470 MHz.
Power can be switched between 10 W, 5 W and 2 W.
It is important to remember that the technical ability to transmit on a certain frequency does not automatically mean that it can be used legally without authorization. Users must comply with local frequency and licensing regulations.
Much wider reception than with a regular transceiver
The SW-9 can receive a considerably wider spectrum:
- VHF and UHF,
- LW,
- MW,
- SW,
- commercial FM,
- AM Airband,
- NOAA Weather.
It also supports SSB – USB and LSB on shortwave.
SSB is for receiving HF signals only, not for transmitting in the shortwave band.
1000 channels and 10 zones
The radio has memory for 1000 channels, which can be divided into 10 zones.
When storing a larger number of frequencies, dividing them into zones is very practical. Users can separate local channels, work groups or monitoring frequencies.
Bluetooth is not just for audio
The SW-9 supports:
- Bluetooth Audio,
- Bluetooth Data.
Bluetooth Data allows the radio to be programmed wirelessly via a phone. The manufacturer lists the Ola Radio app for Android and iOS.
This is more convenient than setting hundreds of channels using small buttons.
2-inch color TFT display
The front panel features a 2.0″ color TFT LCD.
For a device with many modes and channels, a larger color display is more practical than a conventional two-line monochrome panel.
2500 mAh battery and USB-C
Power is supplied by a 7.4 V / 2500 mAh Li-ion battery.
Charging is via USB-C, with the manufacturer specifying a maximum of 5 V / 2 A. Notably, the manufacturer warns that some high-power USB-C PD adapters may not activate the radio correctly, so a basic 5 V power source is recommended.
Two SMA antenna connectors
The SW-9 uses two SMA ports. The manufacturer separates antenna solutions for different bands this way.
The European version is listed as including a standard antenna, a high-gain antenna, a battery, a USB-C cable, a clip, a headset and a strap.
Fall detection safety feature
The manufacturer also lists Fall Detection Alert.
A tilt sensor can trigger an emergency alert when the radio is in an unusual position or has fallen. The feature may be useful when working alone or during outdoor activities.

How does it perform in practice?
Independent reviews particularly appreciate that the SW-9 is not just another basic VHF/UHF handheld radio. Its strengths are the combination of wideband reception, SSB and wireless programming.
On the other hand, it does not replace a full-fledged desktop HF receiver or a professional communication station. Its advantages are its compact size and versatility.
Is the BAOFENG SW-9 worth it?
The SW-9 is an interesting option for a radio amateur or listener who wants one portable device for VHF/UHF communication and, at the same time, monitoring HF, Airband and other bands.
Its biggest advantages are 1000 channels, SSB reception, Bluetooth programming, a color display and USB-C. When transmitting, however, local regulations for frequencies and power must be followed carefully.
